Circle
2018
“Circle” is a public pavilion. It can be located in parks, inside malls, or in scenic spots. The concept of this design is to provide a space for people in which they can walk around and relax. The goal of this design aims to not only to provide a place for people to rest and relax, but also to increase their communication with each other.
Features
With this in mind, I designed a double layer fence surrounding a shallow pit made of concrete. The idea behind including the fence is to create an air of mystery for outsiders when they try to discover what is inside the structure. The negative space of these two fences creates a corridor through which visitors can enter the installation. When people sit inside the structure, the addition of the fences creates a feeling of intimacy and security. This feeling encourages people to stay inside and emphasizes the theme of "gathering".
In addition, the metal plates that go along the railing are rotatable and able to be controlled by everyone. When all plates are facing in the same direction, they create a closed wall that covers the structure. If the plates are not facing in the same direction the inside of the structure is visible through the gaps between the plates.
