“That’s all you need”
2018
“That’s All You Need” is a special wallet that aim to create a comparison between “Objet Petit a” and “Big Other”. It also has a Chinese name “成副身家” which means “ that’s all your property”. The meaning of this wallet is not only creates a discussion about desire and society but also indicates a strong idea of anti-consumerism.
Forward
Drawing on Slavoj Žižek, Hassen suggests that we have moved within a time of global secular capitalism from an order of the “Big Other” to that of the “object a” within a Lacanian appraisal of social and political life. One was once governed by the “Big Other” of authoritarianstatepower, thelaw, andthegovernanceofreligiousauthority. Withinatime of common sense consumerism we are in the order of “objet a,” that of an endlessly produced desire to consume and in “injunction to enjoy.”
How is desire produced through the consumer market”? How can this be juxtaposed
to forms of repressive and regulatory authoritarian power?
Concept
I designed an “U” structure which is only allow to hold cash in this wallet instead of any debit or credit cards. The rubber bands at the bottom of the sides can hold the cash and let the cash follow the curve shape. For sure, it is very hard to hold a card in such a curve shape structure. This design can refer to a new “Big Other” because it limits user’s amount of money each time they go out and remind them-“Please carefully consider each time you want to buy something because you only have that much money and no cards to pay.” Also, I borrow the brand “Supreme” as an ironic because the Supreme effect in recent years is a perfect example for consumerism and unrealistic desire.
The contradiction between “Supreme” and this special structure shows the comparison between “objet a” and “Big Other” which appeal people to rational consumption.
